PARO
A robot seal that calms dementia patients more reliably than psychotropic drugs.
In one sentence
PARO is a soft robot baby seal — designed to be cuddled by dementia patients, who calm down when they hold it.
The wow factor
Three things that make PARO genuinely impressive.
FDA-classified as a medical device — rare for a robot.
Reduces psychotropic medication use in dementia patients by up to 30%.
Charged via a pacifier-like attachment — making the experience feel like caring for a real baby seal.
How it works
A step-by-step breakdown, in plain English.
- 1Five sensors (touch, light, audio, temperature, posture) detect interaction.
- 2A behaviour engine generates one of five emotional behaviours in response.
- 3PARO learns its owner's name and adjusts behaviour accordingly.
- 4Antibacterial fake fur stays clean across many patients.
- 5A pacifier charger restores 6+ hours of battery life.
Where you've probably seen it
Featured in BBC, NHK, and CNN documentaries on dementia care. Indian hospitals have started limited PARO pilots from 2024.
The team behind it
Designed by Dr. Takanori Shibata at AIST (Japan's National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology). First commercial release in 2004.
The full story
PARO is a therapeutic robotic baby harp seal developed by AIST and first commercially released in 2004. It was designed by Dr. Takanori Shibata as a tool to reduce stress, agitation, and loneliness in dementia patients, elderly residents of care homes, and children with autism. PARO is covered in antibacterial fake fur, contains five sensors, and responds to being held, stroked, and spoken to. PARO is classified as a medical device by the US FDA.
