ROS vs ROS 2: Which Should You Learn First?
ROS 1 is end-of-life and ROS 2 is the current standard. Here is the difference in plain terms and what a beginner should do.
Short answer: learn ROS 2. ROS 1 stopped receiving updates in May 2025, and new robotics work, tutorials and jobs have moved to ROS 2. Despite the name, ROS is not an operating system. It is a set of tools and conventions that let the parts of a robot talk to each other.
What both of them do
A robot is many small programs: one reads the camera, one plans a path, one drives the motors. ROS lets them run separately and exchange messages through named channels called topics. Each program is a node.
The main differences
| ROS 1 | ROS 2 | |
|---|---|---|
| Status | End-of-life (final release, Noetic, ended May 2025) | Actively developed |
| Central server | Needs a master process; if it dies, everything stops | No master; nodes find each other |
| Real-time and reliability | Limited | Configurable quality-of-service settings |
| Platforms | Mainly Linux | Linux, Windows, macOS |
| Security | Little built in | Built-in options |
Why this matters to you
If you learn ROS 1 today, you will study material that is no longer maintained and many modern packages will not work. If you learn ROS 2 you can follow current tutorials, use Nav2 for navigation, and your skills match what companies now ask for.
What to learn first
- Understand nodes and topics with a small example.
- Install a current LTS release such as ROS 2 Humble or a newer long-term release.
- Try navigation in simulation before touching hardware.
The Forge track in the Academy is built around ROS 2.
FAQ
Do I need Linux? Ubuntu is the easiest path, though ROS 2 also runs on Windows and macOS.
Is ROS 2 hard for beginners? The ideas are simple. The tooling takes some patience. Learn the concepts in a simulator first.
Can I skip ROS completely? For small hobby robots, yes. It starts to pay off when a robot has several sensors and software parts.
