How Robots Learn: Machine Learning, Imitation and Reinforcement Learning
Three ways robots learn skills: from labelled data, from watching a person, and from trial and reward. Plain-language examples of each.
Short answer: robots learn in three main ways: from examples (supervised machine learning), by copying a demonstration (imitation learning), or by trial and error with a score (reinforcement learning).
1. Learning from labelled examples
Show the system thousands of photos labelled "cup" or "not a cup" and it learns to spot cups. This powers object detection. Good for: perception. Weak spot: it needs lots of labelled data.
2. Learning by imitation
A person guides the robot arm through a task, and the robot learns to repeat it. Good for: manipulation tasks that are easy to demonstrate. Weak spot: it can struggle when the situation differs from the demos.
3. Learning by trial and reward
The robot tries actions, gets a reward when it does well, and gradually prefers actions that earn more. A simulated walking robot might get points for staying upright and moving forward. The reward design matters a lot: see reward shaping.
- Without a well-designed reward: the robot may find a shortcut, like falling forward to "move forward" quickly.
- With good shaping: it learns the behaviour you actually wanted.
Why simulation is used
Trial and error on real hardware is slow and breaks things. So robots often practise millions of times in simulation first. The catch is the sim-to-real gap.
Choosing a method
| If you have | Consider |
|---|---|
| Lots of labelled images | Supervised learning |
| A human who can demonstrate | Imitation learning |
| A good simulator and a clear score | Reinforcement learning |
FAQ
Can a robot learn on its own in the real world? Yes, but slowly and with safety limits, so most training happens in simulation first.
Is deep learning the same thing? Deep learning is a technique that can be used inside all three approaches.
