Rodney Brooks is a roboticist who taught at MIT and helped shape modern robotics.
Big ideas
In the 1980s he argued that robots do not need a detailed model of the world. They can use layers of simple behaviours that react to sensors, such as "avoid obstacle" or "wander". This approach, called behaviour-based robotics, influenced the first Roomba.
Companies
He co-founded iRobot (1990), the maker of Roomba, and Rethink Robotics, which built friendly factory robots. He later started Robust.AI.
Why he matters
Brooks is also known for blunt, realistic commentary about robot hype. His advice for learners: be impressed by what works in the real world, not only by demos.
