Sojourner was a tiny six-wheeled rover, about the size of a microwave oven, that arrived on Mars in July 1997 on the Mars Pathfinder lander.
What it did
It drove short distances around the lander and used an instrument to study the chemistry of nearby rocks. It sent back images and data for much longer than planned.
Why it mattered
Sojourner proved a rover could survive and work on Mars. It was a test for the bigger rovers that followed, including Curiosity and Perseverance.
How it drove
Radio signals take minutes to reach Mars, so operators could not steer it live. It had simple on-board hazard avoidance and followed commands sent from Earth. This is the same idea of shared control that later rovers refined.
Lesson
A small, simple, low-cost robot can prove a big idea. Sojourner showed that rovers were worth building.
Ask R2 Co-pilot anything you didn't understand about Sojourner (first Mars rover). It'll explain it plainly.
